Who we are

Formed in 2023, MSJR is a dynamic band from Pittsburgh, PA, blending Reggae, Rock, and Jazz Fusion into a sound that’s both soulful and energetic. Founded by frontman Jonathan Vanaskie as a heartfelt tribute to his friend, Michael Spade Jr., who tragically passed away by suicide, every song MSJR creates is dedicated to his memory.

Since their inception, MSJR has gained recognition with performances at notable events such as Asbury Park PorchFest 2024, Boise Hempfest 2024, The Great American Banana Split Celebration 2024, Fort Ligonier Days 2024, Movement on the Mountain 2024, and more. They also had the honor of opening for Afroman at The Hard Rock Cafe Pittsburgh and participated in JamBrewzle 2023 and SummerSounds 2023. With each performance, MSJR continues to honor Michael’s memory and bring their eclectic, heartfelt music to a growing audience.

MSJR is involved in many communities across Pennsylvania, spreading awareness for suicide prevention and raising funds for multiple charities including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, SpeakUp ReachOut foundation, Veterans Bushido in Greensburg, The Brandon Nash Scholarship & local VFWs.
